What's in a name?
“Hugger mugger” is recorded from as long ago as 1529 although it's meaning has been somewhat twisted over the years! For example, a recent article in a New York newspaper referred to a female thief who waits for men to come out of downtown bars, gives them a cuddle then pinches their wallet!
However it's original meaning back in 1529 was "secret" or "clandestine."
Although it's origins aren't entirely clear experts on the subject are confident that "hugger mugger" does not refer to someone who mugs people in public places! |
